Alvor Beach

The city of Alvor located in the Algarve dates back to ancient times when Romans controlled the Iberian Peninsula. The town became famous in 1495 as the location where King Dom Joao died. The town like others in Algarve was nearly destroyed by earthquakes in 1532 and 1755. Within the city there are several architectural remains including pillars, arches, and a 16th century Igreja. The town retains its original narrow streets which has allowed the city to retain some of its original charm. Alvor became popular in the 1960's as tourist destination.
